Institutions will drive hedge fund growth, report
Institutional demand for hedge funds, despite that industry’s recent speed bumps, is likely to triple to more than $1 trillion, according to a survey released Tuesday.

2006 M&A and Proxy Fights
So far, it appears that 2006 will be a record year for proxy fights. According to FactSet Research Systems’ SharkRepellent.net Web site, there were 80 proxy fights during the first six months of the year. That exceeds the 54 fights in all of 2005, the 40 contests in 2004, and 74 contests in 2003.

Corporate insiders’ reaction to new market high
According to Prof. Nejat Seyhun of the University of Michigan, who has extensively studied insiders’ behavior, the normal ratio of insider selling to insider buying now stands at around 6.5 to 1. The current ratio of 3.2-to-1 therefore represents less selling than average.

Working with Others: Accessibility and User Research
After personally observing users with disabilities interacting with websites in unexpected ways, I have come to believe strongly in the value of user research—and to suspect that we really don’t know quite as much about real-world accessibility as we think we do.

Google combines word processing, spreadsheets
The company launched on Wednesday a beta version of Google Docs & Spreadsheets. The free program lets people create, manage and share documents and spreadsheets on the Web.

Celebrating a Union, YouTube-Style
Mr. Hurley and Mr. Chen made a short video announcement of the deal on Monday and put it — where else? — on YouTube.
