Get your SEC filings widget here!

THE EDGAR XML feeds were not even a week old and already intrepid web developers were finding new ways to reuse them.

Over at iBanknet, where they have been doing interesting things with XBRL call reports, Marian Albert and Chris Smith saw the opportunity to create a little tool called a “widget” or “gadget” that anyone can use to get the latest SEC filings delivered to any device with web access.

Marian explains: “It’s like having the SEC Filings web pages encapsulated in a mini handy-dandy tool that you can take just about anywhere. You can even look up filings on your iPod!

“We set it up so that any company filing at the SEC can be searched by ticker or CIK number and optionally filtered by form type. Users can click through to the SEC to view the individual filing, corporation filings page, latest filings page or view any of the ATOM feeds.”

Update: I should have embedded the widget here in the first draft of this post, so I’m doing so now so that you can try it out. Enter a ticker symbol in the form field or use the pull-down menu to filter the filings, or use both.

I’ve added their free SEC Filings Gadget to my iGoogle start page (see the screenshot below). I’m using it to keep track of companies that are using notice-and-access for their proxy materials.

Every time I visit my Google start page, I can see the most recent EDGAR flings. The filings can be filtered by form type and ticker symbol or CIK.

The beauty of open technologies is that there’s a huge pool of talented and creative developers ready and willing to come up with new and useful ways to reuse and syndicate your data to investors. I might even try do something with the new EDGAR feeds myself in a future post.
