NYSE, NASDAQ move to scrap compulsory news releases

By Dominic Jones on April 16, 2009

THE New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ plan to eliminate rules that currently require listed companies to issue press releases when disclosing important information.
The NYSE has filed a proposed rule change (PDF 503KB, 18 pages) to amend its Listed Company Manual to allow listed companies to comply with its immediate release policy by disseminating [...]

BGC proves notice-and-access releases work

By Dominic Jones on February 27, 2009

BGC Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ: BGCP), a small-cap inter-dealer broker of financial instruments, yesterday announced its earnings using the notice-and-access news release method we have been advocating for several years.
Despite heated hand-waving by one big PR wire service — and some hand-wringing by ourselves — the earnings release process went off without a hitch, even if [...]

Why I’m nervous for BGC and its next earnings release

By Dominic Jones on February 11, 2009

BGC Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ: BGCP), a small-cap inter-dealer broker of financial instruments, is taking the bold step of using the notice-and-access approach with its next earnings release on February 26 — but I think they should reconsider.
On Monday, the company issued a news release announcing the following:
“In compliance with the U.S. Securities and Exchange [...]

Business Wire’s double standards

By Dominic Jones on February 6, 2009

BUSINESS Wire, the press release distribution service owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A, NYSE:BKR.B), has launched a PR assault designed to squash growing interest from investor relations customers in low-cost notice-and-access news releases.
Quoting unpublished guidelines from the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), Business Wire says companies that want to use its services should include [...]

SEC greenlights "notice-and-access" news releases

By Dominic Jones on August 8, 2008

THE US Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) new guidance for company websites gives investor relations departments an opportunity to cut their disclosure costs and boost traffic to their websites by using “notice-and-access” news releases for Regulation FD.
Although the SEC’s guidance goes so far as to say that “some companies” may not need to use wire [...]

SEC to rule soon on websites for Reg. FD

By Dominic Jones on June 25, 2008

THE US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is expected to address within the next three months whether companies can meet their obligations under Regulation FD by posting information on their corporate websites and in RSS feeds, according SEC Chairman Chris Cox.
The issue is among three areas that the SEC’s  Advisory Committee on Improvements to Financial [...]

NIRI 2008 conference goes 2.0

By Dominic Jones on June 8, 2008

THE NIRI annual conference is underway in San Diego, and while there’s no replacement for actually being there, this year you’ll be able to pick up at least some of the goings on via the Web as attendees use Web 2.0 tools to share their experiences.
We picked up the first online mentions of the annual [...]

SEC adds free news feeds to EDGAR

By Dominic Jones on March 31, 2008

IN A move that portends dramatic changes in how disclosures are disseminated online, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has added news feeds for every issuer and reporting person who files with the commission’s EDGAR database.
The development is potentially bad news for news release distributors such as Business Wire, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, and [...]

Critical comments boost web credibility

By Dominic Jones on March 30, 2008

KEVIN Oakley is chewing me out for my post about Business Wire (BW) fumbling an error on their blog. He figured out that one reason I posted that piece was to take a dig at BW because they won’t run my comments on their blog.
He is right that I used the post to poke BW, [...]
